What makes you proud to work for AmcoGiffen?
It’s a really reputable company in the engineering sector, there’s various disciplines and I’ve just found it as invaluable experience in my career. Working for Amco was a great career move for me. Out of all the companies that I’ve worked for, they’re the most supportive I’ve worked with.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I’ve worked previously in the Rail Sector for over 10 years but recently worked in other engineering industries such as Quarries, Wind Farms and Roads. It is great to get back to Railways, the industry is so varied and exciting with very knowledgeable and supportive colleagues.
How supportive are other departments for your role?
I’ve found that many of the other departments have been really helpful and supportive and some go above and beyond to help, which is brilliant. When I first started with the company my colleagues were there if I needed them. If I had any concerns out of hours (Nightshifts) for example, other departments stepped in and assisted, which at the time was extremely helpful.
How would you describe the culture at AmcoGiffen?
I’d describe the culture as really professional, respectful and challenging. The employees here are very friendly.
Do you have a lot of autonomy in your role at AmcoGiffen?
I feel like that is something Amco really embraces. You’re always given the freedom to work to your own initiative, which only pushes you further.
What makes AmcoGiffen different from its competitors?
The friendly atmosphere is definitely something that really stands out and the fact that they try to accommodate to each person’s situation, whether it’s where you live or what you want to be doing in the company. They’re really supportive to change your role if it’s required.
Social value lead
How would you describe the culture at AmcoGiffen?
It’s a very fast paced environment. The culture is very understanding of people’s differences. There’s people from all over the UK and a good mixture of men and women. There’s regular team meetings and everyone’s engaging and chatting on a social level, everyone’s nice, approachable and easy to get on with really.
How supportive are other departments for your role?
I work across all departments in the business, everyone’s keen to improve and everyone has social value at the top of their priorities. No matter what you want to do there’s always support there for it. Going right from the top or the bottom, everyone’s really helpful. There’s not so much of the ‘Yes sir, no sir’ stuff, it doesn’t happen like that. Everyone’s on a level playing field and everyone’s really nice.
Do you have a lot of autonomy in your role at AmcoGiffen?
There’s a lot of trust in the business, you’re always trusted to do the right thing. You can choose what you want to do and where you want to be. It might be different for those working on site if there’s a specific site they want to on. People aren’t always breathing down your neck saying you have to be doing this or that, obviously if things go wrong you have to show you’ve tried to do the right thing.
What makes AmcoGiffen different from its competitors?
In a lot of construction, it’s big civils projects, so you might be building brand new stations or brand-new railway lines and things like that.
Amco’s at the smaller end of that, we do a lot more maintenance and it’s a bit more fast paced. You’re given short term or very quick projects to do, because there might be a problem with a bridge for example. There’s always something different week in week out and it’s very unlikely that you’ll be on a big project for a very long time, that’s where the main difference lies. The other difference is that we’ve got that social value and we’re trying to make a difference, rather than just go in and do the bear minimum. That’s where I’d say the differences are.
What makes you proud to work for AmcoGiffen?
It’s nice to be a part of multiple projects all over the UK and get that sense of achievement when you leave a site, and you’ve actually made a difference to something. The organisation also has the community and environment at the heart of what it does, so not only do we do the work’s structure itself, there’s a lot of stuff surrounding that. As part of fixing a bridge for example, we might do some community work or help the environment by planting some trees or putting some bird boxes up. It’s different to some companies that do the bare minimum that they are contracted to do, everyone goes that step further. This feeds into the social values stuff that I’m going to be looking at in my new role, to ensure that these things carry on getting done. There’s a sense of achievement in what you’re doing and a sense of pride in doing what the competitors might not be doing.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I like the fact that you have the autonomy to be able to do what you think is best, rather than doing what someone else is telling you to do. That gives you more opportunity to develop. There’s a lot of internal development too. I’ve just been recruited internally to do a new role, so you’re able to follow your aspirations and goals. Amco’s also started a career mentoring programme where you can shadow people, progress into a more advanced role and follow what you’re career aspirations might be, which is really great. I also like that it’s based regionally, so you work as part of a business unit. In this role you won’t be expected to work all over the country, you kind of know where you’re going to be and as part of that, you get to know people within the business unit itself and create friendships with them that way.
